Reaffirmation and Renewal

Stroke aims to be the respected voice of stroke, a journal to which authors aspire, readers enjoy, and the public trusts. Ninety-two percent of our readers are satisfied or very satisfied with Stroke and appreciate such features as Emerging Therapies, Advances in Stroke, and Controversies in Stroke.
Our online manuscript submission system saves time and effort for our authors, and speeds up the review process, allowing for the timely posting of final galley proofs online 1 to 3 weeks prior to print publication.
The media render a great public service by reaching millions through the Internet, in print, and through radio and television. The public continues to access timely news items based on publications in Stroke released through the American Heart Association.
As we embark on our new term, Stroke will have both continuity and change. Two of the Associate Editors will continue in their tasks: Graeme Hankey, dealing with the Pacific Rim, and Michael A. Moskowitz, the Basic Science Editor, both superb editors and good friends. Also continuing are the witty and wise Editors of Controversies in Stroke, Stephen Davis and Geoffrey Donnan.
Time also brings change. John W. Norris, recently returned to his hometown in London, England, and with a new hectic schedule, wishes to step down as Clinical Associate Editor. We will miss his wry humor, telling observations, and candor.
At his own request, Markku Kaste, Associate Editor of Stroke for Europe, will step down at the end of his term on June 30, 2005. He will, however, process all manuscripts submitted to his office by the end of June to the final decision. His team, including Anu Eräkanto, Anne Siivonen, Tuula Kaste, and Assistant Editors Seppo Juvela, Perttu Lindsberg, Risto Roine, and Turgut Tatlisumak, have done a remarkable job in increasing the number and quality of manuscripts from Europe. We thank them all with heartfelt appreciation and friendship.
Professor Kaste’s team dealt with over 650 manuscripts a year. Our online database has enabled us to centralize the logistics of manuscript handling, so that it is possible to have several European Associate Editors to divide labor and have broader expertise and greater geographic representation.
I am delighted to announce that beginning July 1, 2005, authors from Europe and surrounding areas will have the choice of sending their manuscripts to one of several Associate Editors, each world-renowned in clinical stroke: Werner Hacke, Chair of Neurology, University of Heidelberg, Germany, a leader in acute stroke treatment and management; Bo Norrving, Department of Neurology, University of Lund, Sweden, a leader in epidemiology, small vessel disease, and health care research and implementation; and joint editors, Hugh Markus, Department of Neurology, St. George’s University of London, UK, who has particular expertise in stroke imaging and genetics, and Joanna Wardlaw, Department of Neuroradiology, University of Edinburgh, UK, an innovator in clinically relevant imaging.
We thank the members of our Editorial Board who are ending their terms and welcome those joining us. We consider all our past and current Editorial Board members as part of the Stroke family, who can take pride in being part of all that we have achieved together.
We reaffirm our commitments and renew our efforts. May our deeds match our hopes.
