The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors and not the funders. We are very grateful to Prof Martin Dennis who established and coordinated the Stroke Registry from which much of the data used in the model were obtained. The assistance of Dr Paul Dorman in obtaining data on health related quality of life after stroke, and of the Information and Statistics Division of the Scottish Executive for record linkage are gratefully acknowledged.
