Response to Letter by Corea et al
We have read with interest the comments of Dr Corea et al and thank the authors for the interesting remarks. As already discussed in the article, unmeasured confounders like socioeconomic aspects may partly account for the observed association. Furthermore, evaluation of odontopathogens certainly seems an interesting factor although it may be virtually impossible to assess the prevalence of these factors in patients’ childhood. We agree with the authors that edentulism and oral hygiene reflect underlying determinants of patients’ health and that we cannot conclude from these data whether dental disease and atherosclerosis share common risk factors or common etiologies.
