Introduction to Advances in Stroke 2011
In this issue of Stroke, we continue the tradition of the Advances Series introduced to Stroke in 2003. Annually, invited section editors are asked to reflect on important advances in stroke from the previous year. In this issue, 6 articles summarize achievements and future directions in translational research, vascular cognitive impairment, genetics, emerging therapies, vascular neurosurgery, and recovery. This annual accounting emphasizes the dynamic state of stroke research and the tangible progress being made in both the basic and clinical realms. It also serves to focus the research agenda, identifying the important outstanding questions in each area.
The goal of the Advances Series is to provide a very brief and limited review of the research likely to have the greatest impact on future stroke prevention and treatment. Many thanks to the authors who faced the challenging task of distilling a year's worth of science into a brief visionary report.
Best wishes for 2011!
