Abstract 91: Relationship Between Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center Designation and Sparrow Hospital Lansing, Michigan in Conjunction with Michigan State University Department of Neurology
Background: Sparrow Hospital, a 600 bed teaching hospital, achieved Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) certification in February, 2013. The impact of institutional efforts toward CSC designation on patient satisfaction was unknown.
Objective: To determine if the continuous quality improvement efforts of the stroke team for Comprehensive Stroke Center certification impacted stroke inpatient satisfaction scores.
Methods: A total of 600 patients at Sparrow, 18 years and older, who were discharged home following overnight stay with stroke-related DRGs between January 2012 through June 2013 were included. Period A is January 2012-December 2012. Period B is January 2013 -June 2013 after designation of CSC status. Patient satisfaction was assessed and compared via analysis of HCAHPS surveys from January 2012-June 2013 for patients discharged from units that provide the majority of stroke care at this institution.
Results: The average patient satisfaction percentages for several key drivers were examined. Patient perception of “Nursing Communication” remained stable at 84% for period A and period B. Statistically significant differences between Sparrow’s scores and the benchmarks for each indicator at the 0.5 level are compared. “Satisfaction” improved by 1% in period B. Patient perception of “Pain Management” significantly improved to 82% in period B from 74% in period A. Finally, “Likely to Recommend” increased significantly as well. Period B score was 92% compared to 80% in period A.
Conclusions: Patients admitted to Sparrow’s Stroke Unit after CSC designation reported higher levels of patient satisfaction in the areas of “Nursing Communication”, overall “Satisfaction”, “Pain Management” and “Likely to Recommend” .
Discussion: Further studies are needed to understand the complex relationships between improved clinical stroke care and patient satisfaction.
