Special Call for Papers

Stroke in Women

Deadline: November 15, 2008

The editors of Stroke are soliciting the submission of original manuscripts addressing a broad spectrum of topics addressing stroke in women from bench, clinical or population work. This call for papers is in recognition of current evidence reflecting sex differences in the etiology, risk, and treatment strategies in stroke. Stroke science in women is an emerging frontier of knowledge development.

Papers addressing epidemiologic perspectives, primary and secondary prevention strategies and experimental studies are sought. Examples of interest areas include

  1. Age-related risk in women as compared to men
  2. Aspects of cardiovascular disease which predispose women to stroke which may include pregnancy, pregnancy complications, oral contraceptives, and menopause
  3. Link between genetic factors, lifestyle choices and incidence of stoke
  4. Venous thrombosis and treatment modalities
  5. Antiplatelet therapy in primary prevention
  6. Secondary treatment including medical, surgical and risk factor management
  7. Hormone therapy
  8. Gender differences in response to stroke therapy
The editors encourage submission of original articles that deal with basic, clinical, and population studies of stroke and related fields such as endocrinology, obstetrics/gynecology, emergency medicine, preventative medicine, neuroscience, vascular biology, physiology, pharmacology, cellular and molecular biology, and genetics. This call for manuscripts includes basic science studies in experimental animals as well as clinical and population science studies in women.

Responding authors should indicate in their cover letter that the submitted manuscript is in response to this call for papers. The manuscript will undergo normal peer review. If accepted, the article will be published together with other studies appearing in response to this call and the issue will be highlighted in the “Go Red for Women” campaign of the American Heart Association.

The submission deadline for this topic is November 15, 2008. If you have any questions or already have a manuscript in this area submitted to Stroke and would like to have it included for this series, please contact the editorial office:
